The alchemy of fragrance: legendary women and the rituals of Aja Botanicals

Fragrance is memory, emotion and transformation—an invisible thread connecting us to the past, the future, nature, and ourselves. At Aja Botanicals, we believe fragrance is a modern ritual, inspired by legendary women who understood the true power of botanical magic: Morgan le Fay, the Egyptian goddess Isis, and our namesake, the African orisa and forest goddess Aja.

It's why Tilly felt compelled to study it:

“I studied natural perfumery because I wanted to speak the language of the perfumers we work with.

Fragrance is such a fine art—it takes years of training to master. By learning even a little of that world, I can collaborate more deeply, bringing our ideas to life with more nuance and care. It’s made me so much more aware of scent as something emotional, even spiritual—how it can shift your energy, your mood, your whole space.”

For me, fragrance is memory, beauty and wellbeing all in one. It can transport you instantly—to a place, a person, a feeling. The smell of someone you love. A summer evening. A home you never forgot. That’s the magic of it. I think fragrance has always been sacred—used for healing, ritual, even for guiding souls into the afterlife. It carries a high vibration, something that lifts us. And so I wanted our candles to be more than just beautiful. I wanted them to feel fine, intentional, like natural fragrance for your home.”

The ancient roots of fragrance and alchemy

Across time and tradition, plants—whether in the form of essential oils, perfumes or incense—have been used to influence emotion, support healing, and connect us with the divine.

In ancient Egypt, the goddess Isis was associated with deep wisdom and a profound connection to the natural world. She was a healer, a protector of the earth’s elements, and her rituals often included sacred oils made from frankincense, myrrh and jasmine. These botanicals remain foundational in natural fragrance and wellbeing today.

In Celtic myth, Morgana (or Morgan le Fay) is the archetype of the powerful and mysterious woman—part healer, part enchantress. She was believed to carry ancient plant knowledge, creating potions and remedies that worked with the cycles of the earth. Her practice, like all true alchemy, was grounded in nature’s rhythm and transformation.

The idea of alchemy— using plants to support spiritual change—is really about connection. Fragrance, in this light, becomes a modern form of alchemy: a way to shift energy, shape space, and hold emotion in scent.

The feminine wisdom of fragrance

For centuries, women have been the carriers of botanical knowledge. The goddess Isis, revered as the mother of fragrance, used sacred oils and resins in rituals of healing and protection. Aja, our namesake and the West African goddess of the forest, taught the importance of living in harmony with plants and the land.

These feminine figures remind us that scent is more than adornment—it’s a form of power. A way to mark transition. A quiet tool for remembering who we are.

Modern alchemy: the fragrant ritual of Aja Botanicals

Every Aja Botanicals candle is a nod to that ancient lineage. Our fragrances are crafted in collaboration with world-class perfumers, blending the finest essential oils and natural extracts to create scents that are layered, evocative and transportive. Each one invites you to experience the ritual of fragrance—to transform your space, shift your mood, and awaken memory.

  • Dreams is fresh and expansive, with angelica, spikenard, fir needle and fragonia. Ideal for de-stressing, bathing or easing into meditation.

  • Walk on the Wild Side is rich, smoky and sensual—an after-dark scent with labdanum, cade, cabreuva and oakmoss.

  • Hello, I Love You is bright and romantic, with jasmine, geranium, bergamot and frankincense. A floral daydream.

  • Into the Mystic is grounding and forest-rich, with lavender, oakmoss, cedarwood and galbanum.

Lighting an Aja candle is more than sensory—it’s a moment of sanctuary. A small act of intention.

Fragrance now: why scent matters more than ever

We’re in the midst of a fragrance renaissance. Home scent is no longer just a backdrop—it’s a way to define space, set mood, and restore balance. Earthy, green and herbal notes are rising in popularity, connecting us back to natural forms of healing and harmony.

Aja Botanicals sits at the heart of this shift, offering complex, soulful fragrances that restore and transport.

Sustainability in every fragrant breath

Like the legendary women who inspire us, we honour the earth. All Aja Botanicals candles are made using natural waxes, pure essential oils and recyclable, refillable materials. We believe luxury can be slow, conscious and rooted in care.

Light the flame. Inhale. Transform.
