There are places in the world where time seems to slow, where the air is thick with stories, and you could be in any decade and where wisdom lives within the trees.
Recently, I had the fortune to spend time staying in a house surrounded by some of the ancient olive trees in Puglia. They are like living monuments, centuries old, and their silent presence feels sacred. Sitting at the base of their old trunks, I felt really calm and grounded as my energy blended into its strong but quiet frequency. When I sat peacefully there and closed my eyes, I felt my soul expanding and my intuition easier to access. When you get to slow down like that and turn down the thinking mind, inspiration can come in, it can be quite magical and whether this comes from the tree, the cosmos or from within ourselves, there is something powerful in this moment of connection with nature.
The Ancient Olive Trees of Puglia
Puglia’s olive trees are unlike anything I’ve seen. Some are over a thousand years old, and a few might be closer to 3,000. Their trunks are thick, gnarled, and full of character—a testament to endurance and resilience. These trees have witnessed countless seasons, weathered storms and droughts, and yet, each spring, they offer their silvery leaves and generous fruit. Their strength is quiet, steady, and deeply rooted.
Time out in nature.
When you sit beneath a tree, especially one that’s been around for centuries, you can absorb its rhythm. Take a few deep breathes and relax. Trees take their time to grow, they are observers, always present and reaching for the light, no matter what.
Britain’s Ancient Yews and Tolkien’s Inspiration
Closer to home, the ancient yew trees of Britain offer their own silent wisdom. In the churchyard of Stow-on-the-Wold in the Cotswolds, two magnificent yews frame the north door in such a striking way that they are said to have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s depiction of the Doors of Durin in The Lord of the Rings. Standing between these living sentinels feels like stepping between worlds—where history, myth, and nature meet. These yews, like the olive trees of Puglia, hold stories and secrets beyond our own lifetimes. As John Muir wrote, “Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.”
Aja: The Goddess of the Forest
In Yoruba mythology, Aja is the goddess of the forest, the animals and herbal healing. She teaches us the important of the balance of nature. At Aja Botanicals, we channel her spirit, believing that the natural world, and especially trees, have much to teach us when we take time to listen.
Bringing Nature’s Wisdom Home
All of our fragrances are crafted with
natural ingredients, and we love working with essential oils such as cedarwood, sandalwood, and fir needle—notes that are wonderfully grounding. We harness the healing power of these botanicals, believing that lighting a candle, diffusing a scent, and setting your intentions can not only transform your space but uplift your spirit. Nature is the great conductor, orchestrating moments of calm and connection and magic.
So next time you pass an old tree—whether in a wild forest, an olive grove, or a quiet churchyard—pause for a moment and listen. Let its quiet strength remind you to root yourself, to breathe, and to trust in the slow, steady unfolding of life.
